    Sponsored Family Stream

    The Sponsored Family stream is for travellers being sponsored — usually by a family member who is an Australian citizen or permanent resident — to visit and spend time with relatives in Australia. It’s often used when a standard Tourist stream application isn’t suitable, such as after a previous refusal.

    Key Features:

    1. Requires an eligible sponsor in Australia.
    2. Stay periods of 3, 6, or 12 months depending on circumstances.
    3. Allows visiting family, holidaying, or a cruise.
    4. Permits short-term study or training (up to 3 months); no work allowed.
    5. A security bond may be requested by the Department.

    Eligibility Criteria:

    Applicants generally must:

    1. Have an eligible sponsor (family member) who meets sponsorship requirements.
    2. Genuinely intend to visit temporarily and comply with visa conditions.
    3. Meet health and character requirements.
    4. Show sufficient funds to cover the stay (alongside sponsor support).
    5. Have no outstanding debts to the Australian government.

    Note: if a family member wants to support the visit without formally sponsoring, the applicant should instead apply under the Tourist stream with a letter of invitation

    Application Process:

      1. Confirm eligibility of the sponsoring family member.
      2. Sponsor completes the required sponsorship form/undertaking.
      3. Applicant creates or logs into ImmiAccount.
      4. Complete the online application form.
      5. Upload supporting documents: sponsorship evidence, relationship proof, funds.
      6. Pay the visa application charge (security bond may also apply).
      7. Provide biometrics if requested.
      8. Wait for the Department’s decision.
